The Rolf Method

The Rolf Method of Structural Integration (known by some as Rolfing) was developed by Dr. Ida Rolf in the 1940s in America. It is a method in resolving health issues through structural balance and alignment of the body.

Structural Integration is a process of postural change. By using hands-on myofascial release & guided movement, restrictions in the connective tissue are released & re-aligned.

It is a full body MOT, releasing old injuries and finding new patterns of movement.


feet-handson-sq-2Our physical health is re-inforced by the way we stand and move. All body systems are interconnected. A healthy posture helps support the other systems of the body, such as the digestive system, immune system and circulatory system.

This method of bringing your body to its optimum function is due to the role of the connective tissue.

Connective tissue (myofascia) has the ability to change shape when pressure is applied, allowing long-term physical change to take place.

Gravity supports these long-term changes. By bringing the body into balance around the vertical, all changes that take place in a session are further supported in everyday life. Just as an architect looks structurally at a building, an SI practitioner looks at the body in terms of a balance of forces & range of movement to optimise your health.

During a Sessionneck

The series of Structural Integration runs over 10 sessions, typically spaced weekly, with each session lasting 60 minutes.

During a session, there is an initial consultation, followed by deep tissue bodywork. Clients maybe asked for specific movements or to direct their breath to a certain areas of the body to allow a deeper stretch and unwinding.

Clients typically wear sportswear (such as cycling shorts & 2-piece swim wear for women).

In the longer term

Over the 10 Series changes occur both during and between sessions as the body integrates the new information & an increased range of movement into everyday life.

Big structural changes as the body settles can occur up to one year after receiving the 10 Series. Research from photographs taken before, after and many years after show long lasting postural change.
